Dedicated breast CT

Dedicated breast computed tomography (breast CT) is a cutting-edge fully tomographic imaging technology being developed for breast cancer imaging. Optimized for the special contrast, spatial resolution, and tissue coverage requirements of breast imaging, it brings the advantages of CT, as seen in body imaging, to breast imaging, providing real 3D images of the breast with low dose. Breast CT has potential for multiple applications in breast imaging, such as diagnosis, staging, therapy response monitoring, and potentially for screening. To advance the introduction of breast CT into the clinic, it is important to maximize its image quality and to characterize its clinical performance. Several aspects of image acquisition, reconstruction and processing that have an impact on the final image quality remain to be investigated and developed. In addition, the development of dedicated image analysis algorithms could provide further insights about the performance of breast CT for different clinical applications, and might also improve the accuracy in breast cancer diagnosis through high-resolution, 3D imaging cancer-related biomarkers. Finally, the extension of 3D breast CT to being a 4D functional imaging modality holds the promise to maximize the effectiveness of breast cancer treatment.
